To all Haydn fans and lovers of period instruments,
Orchestra Libera Classica was started with a passionate
desire to share with as many people as possible the refreshing sound
of classical music as played on period instruments, particularly the
music of Haydn, which, despite his fame and reputation, is actually
much less well known than one might suppose. We hope you have been
enjoying the initial series of what, with your continued kind support,
will become an ongoing project of concerts and live recordings.
We hope these efforts succeed in communicating our passion for
these great works.
Much music of the early and middle classical period
was created for small-scale orchestras. Even the halls of the
Esterhazy family that supported him for decades were not very
large. The current size of OLC is not much different from that
of the early and middle period Esterhazy orchestras. Hama Rikyu
Asahi Hall, where regularly scheduled concerts are held, has
beautiful acoustics and is ideal for conveying all the interest
and musical detail of Haydn's music along with the enjoyment
of a luxurious sound. In too large a hall, the sound volume
becomes weak, and details are lost so that the music takes on
a homogenized sound. The result is that many interesting features
of classical music cannot be heard. On the other hand, our
decision to conduct activities in a location small enough to
do justice to the music poses a great economic challenge.
Therefore we humbly request that you consider
becoming a patron to support this music. Would you kindly
join other music lovers to become our "Esterhazy family?"
We in Orchestra Libera Classica desire close,
friendly communication with our listeners. Accordingly, we
intend to implement various ideas for pleasant, edifying
fellowship prior to and following our performances. In addition,
in our concert program pamphlets we gratefully acknowledge
the names of each of our supporting Libera Club members, and
as a token of our appreciation we hold salon concert parties
exclusively for members. At these events, we present pieces
and ensembles that can rarely, if ever, be heard performed
in conventional concert settings. Along with enjoyable events
such as these, we hope to hold relaxed chat sessions among
both orchestra and club members.
To paraphrase Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the music
of the past has become the music of the present, and has
become something essential for us. Orchestra Libera Classica
strives to provide the sort of music that we moderns need
for the nourishment of the heart, with the same -- no, more --
variety and abundance than that enjoyed by Prince Esterhazy
more than two centuries ago.
Toward that end, we hope that we may be able to
enjoy your continuing enthusiastic support.
